Community Self-Sustainable Development : CSD

Community Self-Sustainable Development improves basic living conditions, increase local resident’s incomes, and develop a local society.

In September 30, 2009, 7.9-magnitude earthquake occurred near the cost of
west Sumatra, Indonesia destroying 90% of local infrastructures and damaging more than 1700 human lives. With the water pollution, waterborne diseases occurred, and more than ten thousand victims lost their houses, demanding a comprehensive disaster restoration and long-term community development.

Background of CSD in Pariaman, Indonesia

The ultimate goal of CSD is to help the victims overcome trauma and regain the ability and the hope to rebuild, so that they can support themselves even if another disaster occurs.

Principles of the process

Participation

The development is conducted and progressed by local civilians.

Initiative

The civilians play the leading role and conduct the whole process (training, plan, management, assessment). In this process they achieve the ability to apprehend the potential issues and to solve the matter, and as they do so, their expertise and capacity grows.

Community Based

Development is based on the meetings and cooperation of the civilians. With the community based project, a joint crisis management and mutual caring in emergent cases becomes possible. It can also make pain-sharing and rapid recovery borne of mutual support become a cultural habit of the whole town.

We help the civilians to save up their profits and create economic value through regional specialties.
We help them to increase farming incomes, such as forage maize and coconut oil productions.
In order to maintain a balanced increase of the income of each civillian, the assosiation is the center of the process, from funding to creating profit.

Family Resilience

Family Resilience Programme helps a family to build an environment where they can live heathy and safe lives. We select local vulnerable social groups as the recipient of the programme, and provide methods to improve their living environment and hygiene levels.

Spontaneous Diffusion

The Family Resilience Programme is conducted by local agents, not our staffs. We train the female homemakers of the target area selecting some of them as the project conductor. The selected project conductors promote the project to each family and extensively work to make the civilians participate in the project. They visit each family once a week for monitoring and evaluation and hold a weekly appraisal.

The Family Resilience Programme is based on the activities of female agents, with the aim to build mutual care and cooperation within the local society. The project aims to discover human resources inside the society and reinforce their capacity, so that they
can plan and conduct citizen autonomy businesses spontaneously, without the outside support.

The Diffusion Process of the Programme

Model cases fostered by our agents arouse passion and desire in the civilians, and are spontaneously diffused to their neighbors.

Capacity Building Programme provides architect and engineer training to strengthen the civilians' capacity.
With the cooperation of the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works, we select independent males among vulnerable groups and teach them RISHA modular assembly construction techniques; culminating in letting them construct a building by themselves.
The trainees, as architects, construct buildings that are needed in the society, such as schools and multipurpose centers.

We support physical facilities, and, by extension, help the civilians become spontaneous workers and conductors, so that they can vitalize the local economy and create new jobs.

The Outcomes

- Building Schools

We work to reconstruct schools for students who currently study in destroyed, dangerous school buildings.
School building projects are in cooperation with local governments. We determine which region schools are necessary, then evaluate the possibility of sustainable management of schools, and construct them in the earthquake-resistant design.

- Building Multipurpose Center

The multipurpose center can be used as a Capacity Building training center, as well as for a variety of village activities.
We help the activities develop and consequently grow into civilians' associations.

Community Business Center

The center specializes in community business, in order to actively process each family's business.

Local Medical Center

Provide medical checkups in order to maintain a healthy village.
